I received these plates as part of a set for my wedding five years ago.I also bought an additional set three years ago when I found it on clearance at a big-box store. There is a noticeable difference in quality between the two sets, but the biggest difference is in the plates. The bowls and mugs seem to be the same. The newer plates are thinner, lighter, and seemingly more brittle than the original ones.In their defense, I will admit that the original plates were quite heavy, but that is the nature of stoneware.
The plates look nice; the two-toned black glaze adds a touch of elegance and makes the food stand out.The capacity is really large - it can hold way more food than a normal person should eat.I actually have used them many times as serving platters. We reheat plates of leftovers in the microwave, then put them in the dishwasher for easy cleanup.
Now to the bad part.In recent months, we have had several plates crack straight up the middle.I can't really pinpoint a cause, because we have discovered the cracks at different times.Last week I was cooking bacon on one in the microwave, when I heard a loud ping.Turns out it was the plate. It came out of the microwave in two pieces, and left a puddle of bacon grease for me to clean up.Sometimes the crack is so small that we don't even notice until we pick up a plate and find a puddle of juice or sauce from our meal on the table. We have even discovered broken dishes in the dishwasher. This has happened to plates from both sets, leading me to believe there is a flaw in the manufacturing process. At least I know that the plates won't shatter into tiny pieces when they break, but my supply is starting to run low.
Overall, I was very pleased with my plates until recently.Their large capacity and elegant looks make them suitable for parties or everyday living. However, they are not holding up to daily use, and I have had to purchase replacement dinnerware. The Corelle Square 10-1/4-Inch Dinner Plate, Simple Lines goes very well with my other Nautica Arctic Night accessories, and hopefully time will be kinder to those dishes.
