Review of Nautica Arctic Night 16-Ounce Soup / Cereal Bowl

I received these bowls in a set as a wedding gift five years ago. They are still going strong!

Whether you want hot oatmeal, a few scoops of ice cream, or a lovely side salad, this bowl holds it all.The rim extends out about an inch from the internal surface, making it easy to carry around (especially if the contents are hot). The bowl is almost large enough to hold an entire can of Progresso soup.Almost.Don't try to force it all in there; you will regret it!Who needs all that extra broth anyway?

The bowl is made from stoneware, which makes it heavy, but quite resilient. In five years, we have not yet broken one (knock on wood!!).We do have some minor chips and dings on some of the rims, where they have been carelessly plopped into the dishwasher too hard, or banged it against the counter top. It's good to know that if one does get dropped, it won't shatter into a zillion pieces.

The thing with stoneware is that it really retains heat, so be careful when filling it with hot items, or when heating in the microwave.Even the rim can get hot in the microwave (I suspect it is the shiny glaze), so use a pot holder just in case.

There is really only one con I can come up with.If you are the type to drink your milk from the bowl when you are finished eating cereal, you are going to have some problems.Try drinking milk from a saucer, and you will see what I mean. The flat surface of the rim doesn't channel liquids very well, so you could end up wearing them.

Overall, I think these bowls are a great part of the Nautica Arctic Night series. The multi-toned black glaze is very elegant, they hold a lot of food, and have withstood the test of time.
